Clinical Pastoral Education
Our Mission
The Department of Pastoral Care is committed to a mission of supporting the spiritual and emotional health of patients, families and staff of Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. Pastoral Care serves those of all faiths and utilizes a variety of religious resources. The department functions as a bridge for community faith groups-facilitating visitation and support of their members. In line with the educational goals of the institution, Pastoral Care provides accredited programs of Clinical Pastoral Education. This education program is the primary means through which pastoral services are provided.
Educational Opportunities
- Clinical experience is offered in a regional Level I trauma center, a community-based hospital and hospice services.
- Designed to integrate one's own background and experiences into the delivery of the ministry.
- Students provide most of the pastoral services in all areas of the hospital, and are well-integrated in the trauma protocols and health care services for all patients.
- Opportunities to experience crisis ministry and be part of health care teams providing support to patients, families and staff all hours of the day, everyday.
- Located close to Philadelphia and New York, and providing an urban experience without the day-to-day stresses of the big city.
Summer Program
This program is designed especially for seminarians who wish to fulfill seminary or denominational requirements for a CPE experience. This occurs in a variety of clinical areas, seminars, worship experiences and individual supervision.
Tuition for the summer unit is $450. Scholarship information is available upon request for extended and summer programs.
Residency Program
This program offers a full-time 12 month format that includes 4 units of CPE. Pastoral Care residents work in clinical assignments at all sites, and have clinical assignments by the "service line" concept as opposed to the more traditional nursing units. Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network provides opportunities to specialize in critical care ministries such as the Burn Unit, Trauma Neuro, Nephrology, Open Heart Unit, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Free housing is available for students. Five residency positions are available for the program. A competitive stipend plus excellent benefits are provided. Scholarships to cover tuition are offered to candidates accepted into the residency program.
Extended Program
Extended part-time programs of CPE are offered to hospital personnel, area clergy and qualified lay persons who wish to develop their pastoral skills in a clinical setting. This program is offered at selected times throughout the year.
Course requirements include one day each week for seminars and supervision, supervised work in clinical areas and overnight on-call assignments. The extended program is designed to be flexible so students can schedule requirements around full-time work commitments.
Tuition for the extended program is $450 for one unit.
